Hi, I just have big question, so I thought I could ask big gurus here. Anyway the problem is that we want to build a motorcycle and we want to go from the basics, i.e. starting from software. we want to start with designing and perform analysis using software and then build it. Can you guys suggest softwares that I can use. Is CATIA(or Inventor) and ANSYS alone enough to perform all the task? We want to design our own engines, suspension and stuff, so What softwares do you recommend for it. We are not doing it for fun, this is a serious project. this question may seem a bit stupid but bare with me, I don't know any other way to ask this.

There are no stupid questions. :) In fact, it is a very good question as it requires multi-domain simulation capabilities.
Software you will need :
CAD/CAM Software : CATIA, SolidWorks, ProE, Inventor, etc. for the design & machining simulation
Simulation Software : Structural simulation for stress analysis of any structural components.
Kinematics simulation for transmission simulation & generating loads on your structural components.
Flow simulation for air flow over motorcycle & flow inside engines. Fuel combustion inside engines is very complex to simulate.
Controls simulation for controlling your electro-mechanical systems.
You will probably use the structural & kinematics simulation the most.
See here for the names of the simulation packages (http://forums.sme.org/showthread.php?t=729)in each area.
The Orange County Choppers use the SolidWorks platform for design & simulation of their bikes. See PR (http://www10.mcadcafe.com/nbc/articles/view_weekly.php?articleid=206773)& video (http://66.223.111.93/promos/OCC/) here.

Thanks for replying "sugato_deb". One more question is that what is the different between CATIA and Solid works, which one is better and why?

All the CAD packages have their strengths & weakness & there are many studies available (probably for purchase, search on Google) that compare them but the only way to really find out which is the best fit for you is to have it demoed to you & then you spend some time trying it out to do the things you want to do. Once you have used a CAD package, it is quite difficult to shift to another CAD package - so it is worth taking some time up front to make the right decision.
From what you are trying to do, I would recommend that you check out SolidWorks & Inventor (small to mid-market), ProEngineer (mid to large-market) & CATIA (large market) - they will be priced proportionately. Check out their websites first.

I don't know how to ask this question, but I'll ask anyway. We planned to use GDI engine, so my question is about Injection timing which should be programmed in ECU right, what software is used for it to program and simulate, CATIA?. My concern is still in designing Engine, can you help me out in this. Also is it possible to do Kinematics simulation in CATIA.
BTW thanks for replying(Helping). That is useful.

I would recommend NEi Fusion (http://www.nenastran.com/newnoran/neiFusion). You can call NEi Software and they can help you through this process.

CATIA and the companion simulation products by DELMIA have many capabilities for kinematic analysis and simulation.
You can see examples at

As my feeling, STAMP-ENGINEER is one excellent tools for metal forming die and product design, this is an integration environment for CAD/CAE/CAPP system.
We used it more than one year, the result was very good.
